What's New in Tempered Strength, Update 1.9
Release Date: 24/04/2026
Something a little different this week. With the release of 1.9, we're starting something new: an in-depth article covering everything that's changed in each update.
It's been a mad few months. We're extremely happy with how far Tempered Strength has come, from launching just two months ago, to landing our first subscribers, to dropping over 18 updates, and now arriving at 1.9. A lot has changed, and we're just getting started.
Expanding Our Workouts
Up until now, all of our workouts have been built around two logging types: reps and weight, or time in seconds (for things like planks). While this covered the basics, it severely limited what we could build, there was no way to log reps-only exercises, longer timeframes like 5K or 10K runs, or distance-based tracking. Building proper conditioning programs isn't possible.
In this update, we've started fixing that to make way for future conditioning programs.
We've gone back through all of our existing exercises, cleaned up the data, and assigned the correct logging types throughout. We've also introduced a brand new type: reps only. You can now log exercises across three formats:
- Reps, for bodyweight and reps-only movements
- Reps & Weight, for weighted exercises as before
- Time, for timed holds and short timeframes
- We plan to ad additional ones such as Time Long, Time & Distance, Distance in future updates, this was clearing the path for that
Reps exercises also get a new UI improvement: you'll now see the option to add or remove additional weight on any reps-based exercise. So if you select push-ups, for example, you can optionally log added weight, without it being required anymore.
Rest Timer Updates
The rest timer is one of the most-used features in the app, so we felt it was time for a proper revamp.
The biggest change: Auto timers! when you check off an exercise in the set we start or restart the timer and when you check the last exercise in a set, the timer will now automatically close. This encourages you to open a fresh timer for your next exercise, which matters, because different exercises often call for different rest periods, and many users weren't aware of that.
We've also added +15s and −15s buttons directly to the timer, so you can quickly dial in your rest time without navigating away.
Settings Updates
Some things in the app can get repetitive if they don't match how you train. A good example: if you're not focused on tracking Personal Bests, having the PB popup appear automatically every session gets old fast.
With that in mind, we've added two new toggles to the Settings menu:
- Auto Timers, automatically starts and stops rest timers as you check exercises off
- PB Detection in Programs, toggle the Personal Best popup on or off to suit your preference
